Short answer

Heat exhaustion in outdoor workers means the body is struggling to cool itself after heat exposure, causing fluid loss and symptoms such as heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, or faintness.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main problem
The body cannot cool itself effectively during heat exposure.
First response
Stop work, move to a cooler place, and begin cooling.
Emergency warning
Confusion, seizure, collapse, or loss of consciousness needs emergency help.

What happens during heat exhaustion

Working in direct sun, high humidity, or poorly ventilated areas can make it harder for sweat to evaporate. Physical effort, protective clothing, and not drinking enough fluids can add to the strain. A person may look pale or clammy and feel unusually tired, irritable, or unable to continue safely. Muscle cramps can occur, and the pulse may feel fast. Heat exhaustion can worsen if the person remains in the hot environment.

The condition is different from heat stroke, which is a medical emergency involving a serious change in mental state or loss of consciousness. Heat exhaustion should be treated promptly so the worker can cool down and be observed for worsening symptoms.

What to do straight away

Stop the task and move the worker to shade, an air-conditioned room, or another cooler place. Remove extra outer clothing and loosen tight protective equipment. Give small, frequent sips of cool water if the person is awake, alert, and able to swallow; an oral rehydration drink may also be suitable. Cool the skin with wet cloths, fanning, or a cool shower. Stay with the worker and avoid sending them back into the heat until they have recovered and a responsible supervisor has reassessed the situation.

When to seek urgent care

Call emergency services immediately if the worker becomes confused, has a seizure, collapses, loses consciousness, cannot drink, or has very hot skin with a serious change in behaviour. These signs may indicate heat stroke. Do not give fluids to an unconscious or confused person, and do not leave them alone. Arrange medical assessment if symptoms are severe, do not improve after moving to a cool place and starting cooling, or return after recovery. A clinician can also review medicines or health conditions that may affect heat tolerance.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which symptoms should prompt emergency help, how to replace fluids during your work shift, and whether any medicine or health condition makes heat illness more likely. You can also ask when it is safe to resume outdoor duties and whether your work plan needs more shaded breaks, cooling options, or a different schedule.

Questions people ask

Can a worker with heat exhaustion return to the job immediately?

No. The worker should recover in a cool place and should not return to heat exposure until symptoms have settled and a responsible person has reassessed their safety.

What should I do if the worker is confused or unable to drink?

Treat this as an emergency. Call emergency services, stay with the worker, and do not give anything by mouth if they are confused or unable to swallow safely.

How can outdoor teams reduce the risk?

Use shaded or cooled rest areas, plan regular cooling breaks, encourage drinking before thirst becomes strong, and use a buddy system to notice early symptoms.
