Heartburn as an early pregnancy sign

Heartburn may occur in pregnancy, but by itself it is not a dependable early pregnancy sign. Hormonal changes can relax the muscle between the stomach and oesophagus, while later physical pressure can also promote reflux. Many other digestive factors cause the same burning sensation, so a pregnancy test is more useful than symptom-watching alone.

Heartburn usually feels like burning behind the breastbone and may bring a sour taste into the mouth. It can appear after meals or when lying down. Early pregnancy can cause several digestive changes, but heartburn is not specific to pregnancy. Acid reflux, gastritis, or a hiatus hernia may explain the symptom in someone who is not pregnant. The timing of a missed period and test result gives clearer information.

If pregnancy is possible, use a home pregnancy test according to its instructions and repeat it or contact a clinician if the result is unclear and your period does not arrive. Eat smaller meals, remain upright after eating, and notice foods that trigger burning. Check with a pharmacist or doctor before taking antacids or acid reflux medication, particularly if you take other medicines or have a medical condition.

Arrange medical advice if heartburn keeps returning, interrupts sleep, causes difficulty swallowing, or comes with repeated vomiting or unexplained weight loss. Get urgent help for severe chest pain, breathing difficulty, fainting, vomiting blood, or black stools. If a pregnancy test is positive, urgent assessment is also needed for severe one-sided abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, or feeling faint.
