Short answer

Heartburn and fuller-looking hair can occur during pregnancy because hormones and body changes affect different tissues, but neither symptom predicts a baby’s hair or confirms that pregnancy is progressing normally.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the two symptoms

Pregnancy can relax the muscle that normally helps keep stomach contents from moving upward, while the growing uterus can increase pressure in the abdomen. These changes may make reflux and heartburn more noticeable. Pregnancy hormones can also keep more hairs in the active growth phase, making hair appear thicker; shedding often changes after delivery. Heartburn and hair changes vary widely, so their presence or absence does not measure fetal wellbeing. Gastritis or a hiatus hernia may also cause burning outside pregnancy.

For background, see [Heartburn](/symptoms/heartburn/) and [Acid Reflux](/conditions/acid-reflux/).

Comfort measures in pregnancy

Eat smaller portions, take time over meals, and remain upright afterwards. Identify personal triggers such as spicy or fatty foods, caffeine, and meals close to bedtime. Choose gentle hair care, avoid tight hairstyles that pull at the scalp, and mention sudden or marked hair loss at a pregnancy appointment. Check every medicine, supplement, and herbal product with a maternity clinician or pharmacist before using it; pregnancy changes which treatments are suitable.

Ask whether [Acid Reflux Medication](/treatments/medical-management/acid-reflux-medication/) is appropriate for your pregnancy.

When to seek care

Tell your maternity team if heartburn is frequent, prevents eating or sleeping, or is accompanied by repeated vomiting, difficulty swallowing, or upper-abdominal pain. Seek urgent care for vomiting blood, black stools, severe chest pain, breathing difficulty, fainting, severe headache, visual changes, or sudden swelling. These signs need assessment rather than an explanation based on normal pregnancy changes.

Questions to ask your doctor

Which heartburn measures are suitable at my stage of pregnancy? Could another stomach problem explain my symptoms? Is my hair change within an expected pattern, and should my medicines, thyroid health, or iron status be reviewed?

Questions people ask

Does pregnancy heartburn predict a baby with lots of hair?

No. Heartburn cannot reliably predict a baby's hair, and hair changes in the pregnant person have a different biological process.

Can I take a heartburn medicine while pregnant?

Some options may be suitable, but the right choice depends on your pregnancy and health history. Check with a clinician or pharmacist first.
