Heartburn and Itchy Skin in Pregnancy: What to Know

Heartburn commonly reflects pressure and hormonal changes affecting digestion. Itchy skin may instead come from stretching or dryness, irritation from products, eczema, hives, or another skin condition. The presence of heartburn does not identify the cause of itching. Ask where the itch is strongest, whether there is a rash, and whether the palms or soles are involved.

Itching without a visible rash, itching that is intense at night, or itching with dark urine, pale stools, yellowing skin, nausea, or unusual tiredness should be reported promptly to the maternity team. They can decide whether examination and blood tests are needed.

Use fragrance-free moisturiser, short lukewarm showers, loose breathable clothing, and a cool compress. Avoid newly scented products and scratching, which can damage the skin. Eat smaller meals, remain upright after eating, and ask your maternity clinician or pharmacist before using an antacid, antihistamine, cream, or herbal product. Medication choice depends on pregnancy stage and your health history.

Contact your maternity team promptly for severe or generalised itching, itch on the palms or soles, or itching with the warning symptoms described above. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, faintness, severe abdominal pain, vomiting that prevents fluids, or rapidly spreading hives. A rash may reflect atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, hives, or another condition that needs a different approach.
