Health education for gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes is high blood glucose first recognised during pregnancy. It may have no obvious symptoms, so scheduled checks matter. Education helps you understand testing instructions, meal patterns, activity, medicines when prescribed, and why antenatal follow-up may include growth monitoring.

Learn how and when to check glucose, record results, and recognise patterns rather than reacting to one reading. Build meals around balanced portions and follow the plan given by your maternity team. Gentle activity may help when medically suitable. Attend your Antenatal Care Package visits; a Glucose Tolerance Test may support diagnosis, and a Growth Scan may check the baby’s growth.

Contact your maternity team when readings repeatedly fall outside your agreed targets, you cannot keep food or fluids down, or medicine causes concerning symptoms. Seek urgent care for severe weakness, confusion, fainting, heavy breathing, or reduced fetal movement according to your maternity service’s advice.
