Tinea versicolor is a superficial overgrowth of a yeast that normally lives on the skin. It can produce lighter, darker, or pinkish patches, often on the chest, back, shoulders, neck, or upper arms. Fine scaling may be easier to see when the skin is gently scratched. It is not the same as a deep fungal infection, and it is not usually spread through ordinary contact. A rash or colour change has several possible causes, so appearance alone cannot confirm it.

A clinician may recommend a medicated shampoo applied to affected skin for a specified contact time before rinsing. Keep it away from the eyes and follow the product directions rather than leaving it on longer. Topical antifungal treatment may be another option; oral antifungal treatment is reserved for selected situations after medical assessment. Wear breathable clothing, avoid sharing towels, and do not scrub the patches. Scaling may improve before normal skin colour returns, which can take longer.

Arrange a review if patches are spreading, recurring frequently, very itchy, painful, inflamed, or not changing after the recommended course.
