Painful hard skin on the feet

Thickened skin commonly develops where footwear or walking repeatedly loads one spot. A corn is often more focused and painful with direct pressure, while a callus covers a broader area. Cracks can sting and allow germs to enter. Pain with redness, warmth, swelling, or drainage raises concern for infection such as cellulitis; a tender pus-filled area may be a boil or abscess. Burning or clustered pain with a rash can occur with shingles. Pain near the nail edge may come from an ingrown toenail rather than hard skin.

Wear roomy shoes with cushioning, change damp socks, and reduce the activity that repeatedly presses the sore area. After washing, dry carefully and apply a plain moisturiser to intact thick skin; do not cut it with a blade or use strong acid products without guidance. A foot-care clinician can check pressure points, cracks, circulation, and the nail, then discuss safe filing, padding, or treatment. Do not self-treat aggressively if you have diabetes, reduced sensation, or poor circulation.

Seek prompt assessment for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, a deep crack, darkening skin, or pain that is worsening or limiting walking. Get urgent help if you feel very unwell or the foot changes rapidly. An ingrown nail with significant swelling may need specific treatment, including ingrown toenail surgery in selected cases.

Ask whether the thickening is a corn, callus, wart, fissure, or another problem; whether infection is present; and which footwear, moisturiser, padding, or removal method is safe. Ask how diabetes, numbness, or circulation affects your care plan.
