Hard Lump Under the Skin on Top of the Foot

A lump may sit in the skin, fatty tissue, a tendon sheath, or near a joint. Repeated pressure from footwear can irritate a small area, while an inflamed lump may become warm, red, or tender. A firm lesion that slowly changes deserves a clinician’s examination; a lump is not by itself a diagnosis of cancer.

Notice whether the surface is smooth or ulcerated, whether it moves with the skin or deeper structures, and whether foot movement or shoes make it more noticeable. Photographing it beside a familiar object can help show change over time.

Avoid squeezing, cutting, or repeatedly pressing the area. Choose roomy footwear and reduce rubbing until you know what it is. Keep the skin clean and check it occasionally for growth, drainage, colour change, or increasing tenderness.

Arrange a routine medical or dermatology visit for a persistent or unexplained lump. The clinician may inspect and feel it, then decide whether imaging or a small sample is useful. Treatment depends on the finding; an intralesional steroid injection is relevant only for selected inflammatory lesions.

Seek prompt care if redness spreads, the foot becomes hot or swollen, pus appears, pain escalates, walking becomes difficult, or you develop fever. Seek urgent help after an injury if the foot is misshapen, numb, or difficult to move.

Ask what tissue the lump seems to involve, whether its movement is reassuring, what changes should trigger earlier review, and whether footwear pressure or an old injury could be contributing.
