Hard lump on shin bone painful to touch

Erythema nodosum causes tender, inflamed nodules, often over the fronts of the lower legs. The skin may look red or bruise-like as the inflammation settles, and several areas can appear over time. The condition can occur alongside an infection, medicine reaction, or another inflammatory illness, so the lump is interpreted with symptoms such as fever, joint aches, bowel complaints, or breathing symptoms.

A single bump after direct trauma, a hot area with drainage, or swelling that follows a wound may have a different explanation. The shin has little padding over bone, so pressure from kneeling or clothing can make tenderness more noticeable without identifying the cause.

Avoid pressing or massaging the nodules and choose comfortable clothing. Note when they appeared, whether new areas are forming, and any recent illness, medicine change, injury, or joint symptoms. Arrange a medical assessment, particularly when the lumps are unexplained or accompanied by general symptoms. Treatment focuses on the underlying trigger; a clinician may consider oral corticosteroid treatment only after evaluating causes for which it is suitable.

Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, fever, spreading redness, pus, or difficulty walking. Get urgent help for sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, or one-sided leg swelling. Tell the clinician promptly if you are pregnant, recently started a medicine, or have significant bowel, joint, or breathing symptoms.
