What should you know about hard breast cyst?

Breast cysts can range from soft to firm because the fluid stretches the surrounding tissue. Some become more noticeable or tender around hormonal changes, while others remain present. Touch alone cannot reliably distinguish a cyst from a solid lump. A clinician may examine the area and recommend breast ultrasound to see whether it is fluid-filled or solid. A cyst can also sit close to the chest wall, making its edges feel less distinct.

Note when you first noticed the area, whether it changes during your cycle, and whether there is pain, nipple discharge, or skin change. Arrange a medical appointment for a new lump, especially if it persists after your next cycle or becomes larger. If imaging shows a simple cyst, observation may be enough; a painful or troublesome cyst may be drained by a trained clinician. Do not squeeze or repeatedly press it.

Seek prompt medical care if the lump is rapidly enlarging, the breast becomes red and hot, or you develop fever. Contact a clinician soon for bloody or clear nipple discharge, nipple pulling inward, dimpling, a new lump in the armpit, or a firm area that does not settle. These signs do not identify the cause by themselves, but they warrant examination.

Ask whether the lump feels cystic or solid, whether breast ultrasound is appropriate, and what change should trigger a review. You can also ask whether drainage is useful if the area is painful and how you should monitor it.
