Hands and feet swelling in heat: what it can mean

Short answer
Hands and feet may swell in hot weather because heat widens blood vessels and fluid can collect in dependent tissues.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
Hands and feet may swell in hot weather because heat widens blood vessels and fluid can collect in dependent tissues. The puffiness may be more noticeable after standing, walking, or sitting with your arms down. It often eases as the body cools and the limbs are raised, but swelling that is painful, one-sided, persistent, or linked with other symptoms deserves assessment.
What heat-related puffiness can mean
Warm conditions can increase blood flow near the skin. Pressure in small vessels may encourage some fluid to move into nearby tissues, especially around fingers, ankles, and feet. Tight rings, shoes, or watch straps can make the change more uncomfortable. Swelling is also affected by recent activity, salt intake, injury, inflammation, and medicines, so heat is not the only possible explanation. A swollen hand can follow an injury such as a distal radius fracture, while inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis can affect the hands. These conditions present with swelling but cannot be diagnosed from swelling alone.
What you can try
Move between shade and a cooler room, drink normally, and avoid wearing rings or tight footwear while the swelling is present. Rest with your hands and feet raised above heart level for short periods. Gentle opening and closing of the hands and easy ankle movements can support comfortable circulation; stop if pain increases. Do not apply ice directly to skin, and do not use compression without checking that it is suitable for you. Note when the swelling starts, whether both sides are affected, and what makes it better or worse.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for swelling with trouble breathing, chest pain, faintness, confusion, a blue or very pale limb, or sudden weakness. Arrange prompt assessment if one hand or foot becomes markedly swollen, hot, red, very painful, numb, or difficult to move, or if swelling follows an injury. Book a routine appointment when puffiness keeps returning, does not settle after cooling and elevation, or is accompanied by fever, widespread swelling, or changes in urine.
Useful questions for your doctor
Ask what pattern of swelling fits your examination, whether a medicine or health condition could contribute, and which movements or cooling measures are appropriate. Bring a list of medicines and photographs showing the swelling at different times of day.

Questions people ask
Why do my rings feel tight in hot weather?
Heat can widen blood vessels and allow extra fluid to collect around the fingers, making rings feel tighter.
Should heat-related swelling always be treated?
Mild swelling that settles with cooling and elevation may be monitored, but persistent, painful, one-sided, or rapidly worsening swelling should be assessed.
