Hand swelling near the thumb: what to know

Swelling at the thumb base may be related to a joint, while swelling along the wrist side of the thumb can involve tendons. A bite or small wound may affect the skin, and a fall can injure the wrist or thumb even when the mark is subtle.

Pain with gripping, pinching, or moving the thumb gives useful clues, as do bruising, warmth, clicking, numbness, or reduced strength. Location alone cannot identify the cause. Compare both hands and note whether the swelling appeared suddenly or built up during repeated use.

Rest from forceful gripping and repetitive thumb movements. Keep the hand supported in a comfortable position, use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods, and remove rings or tight jewellery. Avoid deep massage if there may have been an injury.

Arrange assessment if symptoms persist, interfere with ordinary tasks, or follow a fall. A clinician may examine thumb motion, grip, sensation, and the wrist, then decide whether imaging or hand therapy is useful.

Seek urgent care after an injury if the thumb looks crooked, cannot move, or the hand becomes very painful, numb, pale, or blue. Prompt review is also needed for a hot red swelling, fever, pus, or redness spreading away from a wound.

Ask whether the swelling is centered in a joint, tendon, skin, or bone; which movements to avoid; and whether a splint, imaging, or physiotherapy would help. Mention the activity or injury that came before the change.
