Hand, foot and mouth disease with stomach pain

Hand, foot and mouth disease commonly affects the mouth, hands, and feet, with fever, sore throat, mouth ulcers, and a spotty or blistering rash. A child may describe tummy discomfort because fever, swallowed mucus, reduced eating, constipation, or dehydration can upset the stomach. Vomiting or diarrhoea may point toward gastroenteritis or food poisoning instead. The location, severity, timing, and accompanying symptoms help a clinician judge whether the pain belongs to the viral illness or needs another explanation.

Encourage small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink, especially when mouth ulcers limit drinking. Offer bland, soft foods if wanted and avoid acidic, spicy, or very hot items that sting. Let the child rest and record when pain occurs, where it is felt, and whether urine, stools, vomiting, or fever change. Do not give medicines intended for adults or combine products without checking the label or a pharmacist.

Obtain same-day advice for worsening pain, repeated vomiting, blood in vomit or stool, a swollen abdomen, or pain that settles in one particular area. Urgent help is needed if the child cannot keep fluids down, passes very little urine, is confused, unusually floppy, or is difficult to wake. Sudden severe pain, breathing difficulty, or a seizure needs emergency care.

Could dehydration, constipation, or another infection explain the pain? Does the abdomen need examination? What fluid and pain-relief plan suits the child’s age? Which changes in vomiting, stools, urine, or fever should prompt urgent review?
