Hand, foot and mouth disease side effects

Fever and a sore throat may appear before spots. Small sores in the mouth can make swallowing uncomfortable, so a child may drool, refuse food or drink less than usual. Blisters or spots may occur on the hands, feet, around the mouth and sometimes the nappy area. The rash can be tender or itchy. Tiredness and irritability are also possible. These effects usually settle as the illness clears, but poor fluid intake can lead to dehydration.

Offer frequent small sips of cool water or milk and soft foods if they are comfortable. Avoid acidic, spicy or very hot foods when mouth sores hurt. Keep the child rested, wash hands after nappy changes and avoid sharing cups, towels or cutlery. Use only age-appropriate fever or pain medicine according to its label or a clinician’s advice; never give aspirin to a child. A clinician can confirm the diagnosis and discuss hydration and symptom relief.

Arrange medical advice if the child is drinking very little, has a dry mouth, is passing much less urine, seems unusually sleepy or cannot settle. Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, severe difficulty swallowing, confusion, a seizure, a severe headache with a stiff neck, or a child who is difficult to wake.
