Hand, foot and mouth disease scientific name

The name refers to the areas where symptoms often appear: the hands, feet and mouth. It is different from foot-and-mouth disease in livestock and does not mean a child has that animal infection. Enteroviruses can spread through respiratory droplets, saliva, stool and fluid from blisters. Children may have fever, sore throat, mouth ulcers or a spotty rash, and the exact combination varies.

Knowing the virus family does not change the basic home plan: encourage fluids, offer soft foods, allow rest and keep hands clean. Avoid sharing cups, cutlery and towels. Protect blisters from scratching and use symptom medicine only when a clinician or pharmacist confirms it is suitable. A doctor may diagnose the illness from the examination; testing is not always needed.

Arrange a Child Health Consultation if the diagnosis is uncertain, mouth sores interfere with drinking, or the child is becoming less alert. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, a seizure, collapse, severe dehydration or difficulty waking. Fever can occur with this infection, but a very unwell child needs assessment regardless of the name of the illness.
