Short answer

Most children recover from hand, foot and mouth disease with rest, fluids and comfort care as the fever, mouth sores and rash settle.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Recovery focus
Fluids, rest, soft foods and comfort.
Watch closely
Drinking, urination, alertness and breathing.

Signs that recovery is under way

A child may gradually regain energy and interest in food as mouth soreness eases. The spots and blisters can dry and fade, although the skin may remain sensitive for a while. Peeling around fingers or toes can occur after the illness and is usually handled gently with moisturiser; do not pull loose skin. Recovery is not judged by the rash alone: drinking, urination, alertness and breathing are useful signs of overall wellbeing.

Supporting recovery at home

Keep offering water or other suitable fluids in small, regular amounts. Cool drinks and soft foods may be easier when the mouth is sore. Encourage quiet activity and let the child sleep. Wash hands carefully, clean shared surfaces and avoid sharing utensils while the child is unwell. Follow dosing directions for any recommended medicine and check with a clinician before using products on mouth sores.

When recovery needs review

Contact a Child Health Consultation service if the child is not drinking, passes very little urine, becomes difficult to wake, or is getting worse rather than gradually improving. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, a seizure, severe weakness or signs of dehydration such as a very dry mouth and no tears. Ask for advice if fever persists or returns after the child seemed better.

Questions to bring

Ask when normal activities can resume, whether peeling skin needs treatment, how to protect siblings, and which symptoms would mean the child needs another examination.

Questions people ask

Can a child return to normal food straight away?

Return to usual foods as mouth pain allows; soft, cool choices may be more comfortable at first.

Is peeling skin after the illness always serious?

Mild peeling can follow the rash, but pain, swelling, pus or spreading redness should be assessed.
