What should you know about hand foot and mouth disease on feet?

Foot lesions may be small red marks, raised spots or fluid-filled blisters. They can be more noticeable on the soles or edges because pressure from standing and shoes irritates them. A child may limp, avoid walking or complain when socks are put on. The illness may also include mouth sores, a rash on the hands or bottom, and fever. A foot rash by itself has several possible explanations.

Keep the skin clean and dry, then pat it gently. Choose roomy shoes or soft socks and avoid activities that cause rubbing while the feet are sore. Do not pierce blisters; intact skin provides a natural covering. Encourage fluids and soft foods if mouth sores are present. Wash hands after touching the rash and avoid sharing footwear, towels or personal items during the illness.

Have the child examined if foot pain prevents normal movement, the rash becomes hot, swollen or draining, or the pattern does not fit the rest of the illness. Seek prompt help for poor drinking, reduced urination, unusual sleepiness, breathing trouble, or a fever that persists or causes concern. A clinician can check for infection and recommend age-suitable relief.
