What should you know about hand foot and mouth disease on bottom?

The rash is not limited to the hands and feet. Spots can occur on the buttocks, around the nappy area and on the legs. Covered skin may become sore because moisture and rubbing make inflamed areas feel worse. Mouth ulcers and a fever can occur at the same time, although not every child has every symptom. Nappy rash, eczema and other infections can look similar, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Change nappies promptly and rinse the area with lukewarm water or a gentle cleanser. Pat rather than rub, and allow brief periods without a nappy when practical. Dress the child in loose, breathable clothing. Avoid fragranced wipes, harsh antiseptics, picking and popping blisters. Wash hands after each change, and do not share towels. Encourage drinks, especially if mouth pain makes swallowing difficult.

Arrange an assessment if the bottom rash spreads quickly, becomes hot or swollen, develops pus, or is causing substantial pain. Seek prompt help if the child drinks very little, passes much less urine, is difficult to wake, has breathing difficulty, or develops a fever that concerns you. Medical review is also sensible when the rash remains unclear or does not begin settling.
