What should you know about hand foot and mouth disease itch?

Itching can come from inflamed skin as spots develop on the hands, feet, legs, arms or around the mouth. Blisters may feel tender as well as itchy. Mouth sores are usually painful rather than itchy, so a child may refuse food or drinks for that reason. Scratching can break the skin and allow bacteria to enter. The itch itself does not show how severe the infection is.

Keep fingernails short and wash hands often. Use cool, clean compresses on itchy areas, then pat the skin dry. Loose cotton clothing and breathable footwear can limit rubbing. Offer frequent sips of cool fluid if mouth sores are present, and choose soft foods. Do not pop blisters or apply unfamiliar creams. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a suitable age-appropriate medicine is appropriate.

Arrange a child health assessment if itching is severe, the skin becomes increasingly red, warm, swollen or oozy, or the diagnosis is uncertain. Seek prompt medical help if the child cannot drink, urinates much less, seems unusually sleepy, has trouble breathing, or develops a fever that concerns you. Keep the child home from close contact while unwell and follow local childcare guidance.
