How is hand, foot and mouth disease treated?

This viral illness can cause fever, painful mouth ulcers and an itchy or tender rash. Mouth pain may make a child reluctant to drink, and that can lead to dehydration. Antibiotics do not treat the virus. A clinician can check that the symptoms fit this illness and advise which fever or pain medicine is suitable for the child's age and health.

Offer cool water, milk or other suitable fluids in small, frequent amounts. Soft foods may be easier than salty, spicy or acidic foods. Use medicines only as directed on the label or by a clinician; never give aspirin to a child. Keep fingernails short, discourage scratching, wash hands carefully and do not share towels, cups or cutlery.

Contact a clinician when mouth pain prevents drinking, fever is persistent, or the diagnosis is uncertain. Get urgent help if the child is difficult to wake, has breathing problems, a seizure, severe headache with neck stiffness, or signs of dehydration such as a dry mouth and very little urine.
