Short answer

After exposure to hand, foot and mouth disease, symptoms commonly appear within several days, but the exact timing can vary.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

What to watch for
Fever, sore throat, mouth ulcers, and a later rash or blisters.
After exposure
Practise hand hygiene and monitor drinking, urination, and alertness.

Understanding the waiting period

Exposure does not always lead to illness, and the day of contact may be difficult to identify because the virus can spread before obvious signs appear. Watch for fever, tiredness, sore throat, reduced appetite, mouth ulcers, and small spots or blisters on the hands, feet, or other areas.

The first symptoms may resemble another viral infection. A later combination of mouth sores and a characteristic rash makes hand, foot and mouth disease more recognisable, although only a clinician can advise when the pattern is uncertain.

What to do after contact

Keep up careful handwashing, especially after toileting, nappy changes, and wiping a child's nose or mouth. Do not share cups, utensils, towels, or toothbrushes, and clean commonly touched toys and surfaces. Check the exposed child each day for changes in temperature, drinking, energy, and skin or mouth symptoms.

If symptoms appear, offer regular fluids and soft foods, keep the child comfortable, and follow nursery or school guidance about staying home. Record when the first sign was noticed.

When to seek medical help

Contact a clinician if symptoms develop in a baby, if mouth pain makes drinking difficult, or if you are unsure whether the rash is infectious. Seek urgent care for marked drowsiness, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, very little urine, a seizure, or a child who looks seriously unwell.

Questions for an assessment

Ask whether the timing and symptoms fit hand, foot and mouth disease, how long to avoid group activities, what household precautions are needed, and which warning signs require urgent review.

Questions people ask

How soon can symptoms start after exposure?

Symptoms commonly begin within several days, although timing varies and the exposure date may be uncertain.

Should my child be tested immediately after contact?

Testing is not usually the first step for an otherwise well child; monitor symptoms and seek advice if illness develops or the diagnosis is unclear.
