Hand, foot and mouth disease during pregnancy

The infection may cause fever, sore throat, tiredness, painful mouth ulcers, and small spots or blisters on the hands, feet, or other skin. Many adults have mild symptoms or no symptoms. The virus spreads through respiratory secretions, blister fluid, stool, and close contact.

A late-pregnancy infection can require individual advice because an infection close to delivery may be passed to a newborn. This does not mean that every exposure causes a problem; your clinician can interpret the timing and your symptoms.

Tell your obstetric or maternity team about symptoms or exposure. Rest, drink regularly, and choose soft, cool foods if mouth ulcers hurt. Wash hands thoroughly after toileting and before preparing food, avoid sharing utensils, and avoid close contact with anyone who has active blisters. Check any pain or fever medicine with a clinician or pharmacist before taking it.

Seek prompt medical advice for a persistent fever, inability to drink, reduced urination, worsening weakness, or symptoms close to labour. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion, severe dehydration, or reduced fetal movement according to your maternity team’s instructions.
