Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease All Over the Body

The virus can produce small red spots, raised bumps or fluid-filled blisters in several areas at once. Mouth ulcers may make swallowing painful, while fever, sore throat and tiredness can accompany the skin changes. A rash extending across the body does not by itself show how serious the illness is, and not every spot is caused by hand, foot and mouth disease. The appearance, timing and the child’s hydration and behaviour help a clinician judge the situation.

Keep the skin clean and avoid picking or bursting blisters. Loose clothing can reduce rubbing. Give regular sips of fluid and choose foods that are easy to swallow; chilled options may feel soothing. Wash hands carefully and clean frequently touched surfaces, especially after contact with saliva, stool or blister fluid. Do not share towels, cups or eating utensils. Use medicines only as directed for the person’s age and health.

Seek prompt care if the person cannot swallow fluids, urinates much less, becomes very drowsy, has trouble breathing, develops a severe headache or stiff neck, or has repeated vomiting. Get medical advice when the rash is rapidly changing, looks infected with increasing redness or pus, or the diagnosis is unclear.
