Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease: What Age Is It Common?

The illness spreads readily where children share toys, utensils and close contact. A child may develop fever, sore throat, reduced appetite, mouth sores and small spots or blisters on the hands and feet. The rash can also appear around the buttocks, legs or arms. Adults and older children may have milder symptoms, but they can still pass the virus to others. Age alone cannot confirm the diagnosis; the pattern of mouth changes, rash and general health matters.

Offer frequent drinks and soft, cool foods if mouth sores make eating uncomfortable. Avoid acidic or spicy foods that sting. Encourage handwashing after toileting, nose wiping and touching blisters, and do not share cups, towels or cutlery. Keep the child home when unwell and follow local nursery or school advice. A clinician can advise on suitable symptom relief for the child’s age; never give aspirin to a child unless specifically prescribed.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if a child is drinking very little, passing much less urine, unusually sleepy, difficult to wake, breathing poorly or developing severe headache, stiff neck or repeated vomiting.
