Hairy oral leukoplakia

The patch may have vertical folds or a hairy-looking surface and is often not painful. It is associated with Epstein–Barr virus activity and weakened immune defences, so it is not the same as ordinary friction, thrush or every white mouth patch. A clinician examines its location, texture and whether it can be wiped away. The appearance alone cannot establish the cause, and a biopsy may be suggested when the diagnosis is unclear or another condition must be excluded.
