What should you know about hair scalp skin peeling?

Fine flakes with itch can occur with dandruff or other inflammatory scalp conditions. Thick, silvery scale may occur with psoriasis, which can also affect skin beyond the hairline. Tender peeling after outdoor exposure may be sunburn, including on a parting or a closely shaved scalp. A round scaly patch with broken hairs can occur with scalp ringworm. Peeling limited to one foot is more consistent with athlete's foot than a scalp problem, but touching an infected area can spread fungus. These clues are helpful, but they do not replace an examination.

Do not pull, scrape, or pick the loose skin. Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, then pat dry. Pause hair dye, fragranced products, oils, and heated styling if they sting or worsen the peeling. Protect an exposed scalp from sunlight with a hat and shade. Do not share brushes, hats, towels, or pillowcases while infection is possible. A clinician can advise whether a medicated product is appropriate, especially when scale is thick, painful, or persistent.

Arrange prompt medical care for pus, increasing warmth, severe tenderness, fever, rapidly spreading redness, or extensive blistering. Seek assessment for a peeling patch with broken hairs, swelling, or hair loss, as scalp ringworm may need prescription medicine. Recurrent scale, bleeding from scratching, or peeling that continues despite removing an irritant also warrants review.

Ask whether the pattern fits psoriasis, sunburn, irritation, or fungal infection; whether the hairline, ears, eyebrows, or nails should be checked; which cleanser or treatment is safe; and whether household items need special cleaning.
