What should you know about hair follicle rash?

Short answer
A hair follicle rash is a group of irritated, inflamed, or itchy spots centred around hairs, and its cause depends on the pattern and symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical clue
- Spots or bumps are centred on individual hairs.
- First step
- Reduce heat, friction, scratching, and new irritants.
What the pattern can mean
Sweat, friction, occlusive clothing, shaving, a new product, or an infection can irritate follicles. Look for clues such as scaling, blisters, crusting, tenderness, or a rash in skin folds. A rash that is very itchy at night or affects close contacts needs a different assessment from one that follows heat or rubbing. Conditions such as Contact Dermatitis, Heat Rash, Intertrigo, Ringworm, Scabies, Psoriasis, Atopic Dermatitis, or Drug Rash can produce overlapping appearances.
What you can do now
Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Keep the area cool and reduce rubbing from tight clothing, straps, or repeated shaving. Pause any recently introduced cream, deodorant, hair-removal product, or detergent if it touches the rash. Do not scratch, squeeze, or share towels. Note when it began, where it started, whether it spreads, and what changed beforehand; photographs can help a clinician compare changes.
When to seek care
Arrange medical assessment if the rash is spreading, painful, warm, draining, crusted, repeatedly returning, or not settling with gentle care. Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or face, trouble breathing, faintness, fever with a rapidly worsening rash, or severe pain. A clinician may examine the follicles and surrounding skin to decide whether testing or a targeted treatment is appropriate.
Questions for your doctor
Could shaving, friction, heat, or a product be irritating these follicles? Does the pattern suggest inflammation, infection, or another skin condition? Which products should I stop, and what signs mean I should return promptly?

Questions people ask
Is every follicle-centred rash folliculitis?
No. Follicle-centred irritation can resemble contact, heat, fungal, inflammatory, or infestation-related rashes, so the surrounding pattern matters.
Should I shave over the rash?
Avoid shaving the affected skin until it has settled, because friction and small cuts can add irritation.
