Short answer

Postpartum hair loss usually reflects a temporary shift in the hair-growth cycle, so gentle handling, adequate nourishment, and scalp care can reduce breakage while you watch for warning signs.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What postpartum shedding means

After pregnancy, hairs that stayed in the growing phase can move into a resting and shedding phase. You may notice extra strands during washing, brushing, or on clothing, often with a more visible part or thinner-looking ponytail. This presentation is commonly called postpartum hair loss; it does not mean the follicles have necessarily been permanently damaged. Hair density may take time to look fuller again, and other causes can occur at the same time. Read more about [Hair Loss](/symptoms/hair-loss/).

How to care for your hair

Wash the scalp as often as needed for comfort, using a mild shampoo and lukewarm water. Detangle with a wide-tooth comb, starting at the ends, and avoid tight ponytails, extensions, vigorous brushing, bleaching, and frequent high heat. Let hair partly air-dry before using a dryer on a low setting. Eat regular meals with protein and varied foods; ask a clinician before starting supplements, especially while breastfeeding or taking prenatal vitamins. Hair Supplement Therapy may be discussed when a deficiency is suspected, while Topical Minoxidil requires individualized advice.

When to arrange an assessment

Arrange medical advice if shedding is sudden or patchy, the scalp is painful, inflamed, scaly, or itchy, or you see broken hairs and smooth bald areas. Seek prompt care for signs of infection such as spreading redness, warmth, swelling, or drainage. Mention fatigue, weight change, heavy bleeding, restrictive eating, or a new medicine because these details can point to another contributor. A clinician can examine the scalp and decide whether testing or treatment is appropriate.

Questions for your doctor

Could this shedding fit a postpartum pattern, or do you see evidence of another scalp or health problem? Should I review my diet, medicines, or supplements? Which styling practices should I pause, and when would treatment be reasonable?

Questions people ask

Should I stop washing my hair?

No. Clean the scalp as needed with a gentle shampoo; avoiding washing does not stop hairs already ready to shed.

Can tight hairstyles worsen postpartum loss?

They can add traction and breakage, so loose styles are kinder while shedding is active.
