H pylori and food poisoning: what should you know?

H pylori can persist in the stomach and may irritate its lining, leading to indigestion, upper abdominal pain or nausea. Food poisoning is an acute illness caused by contaminated food or drink and may bring diarrhoea, vomiting, cramps or fever. Symptoms alone cannot reliably identify the cause. A clinician may ask when symptoms began, what you ate, whether other people are ill, and whether you have had previous stomach problems.

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration solution if vomiting or diarrhoea is present. Choose simple foods as your appetite returns and avoid alcohol or foods that clearly worsen discomfort. Do not start leftover antibiotics; confirmed H pylori needs a prescribed combination of medicines, while food poisoning treatment depends on its cause. A clinician can arrange testing after reviewing your symptoms and medicines.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms persist, recur, or prevent you from keeping fluids down. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, faintness, confusion, blood in vomit or stool, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine and marked weakness. Fever with worsening illness also deserves prompt assessment. If breathing becomes difficult or you collapse, call emergency services.
