Gypsum plaster of paris in orthopaedic care

When moistened, gypsum plaster changes from a powder into a workable paste that hardens around a shaped bandage. A clinician moulds the cast to support an injured or corrected body part while it heals or adapts. The cast may be used for fracture care, or in staged treatment such as clubfoot casting. It is different from a removable support because it is shaped to stay in place.

A fresh cast can feel warm while the material sets. Swelling may change how it feels afterward, so circulation, sensation, movement, and skin comfort should be checked as instructed.

Keep the cast dry unless the treating team gives different instructions. Do not push objects inside it to scratch, trim its edges, or remove padding yourself. Elevate the limb when it is swollen and move free fingers or toes gently if advised. Check the exposed skin for colour change, numbness, increasing tightness, or unusual odour. Attend scheduled reviews so the fit and healing can be assessed.

Contact the treating team promptly if pain increases despite the agreed plan, the cast becomes wet or cracked, or fingers or toes become cold, pale, blue, numb, or difficult to move. Seek urgent help for severe swelling, loss of circulation, sudden shortness of breath, or a fever with drainage or a foul smell from the cast.

Ask how long the cast is expected to stay, whether you may bear weight, how to keep it protected during bathing, and which changes require an urgent call. Clarify when the next cast check or change is planned.
