Guardant Health liquid biopsy: what to know

Liquid biopsy refers to analysing material released into the bloodstream, including fragments of circulating tumour DNA. A Guardant Health test may be considered when a clinician wants molecular information about a known or suspected cancer, or when a tissue sample is difficult to obtain. The result may identify genetic changes that help the team consider targeted treatment or monitor a known disease.

A blood result is not the same as a complete diagnosis. A result may be uninformative when the blood contains too little tumour DNA, and detected changes need interpretation alongside symptoms, scans, pathology, and medical history. A tissue biopsy may still be needed.

Ask which specific test is being ordered, what question it is intended to answer, and whether you need any preparation. Tell the team about current treatment and previous test results. Blood is collected in tubes and sent for laboratory analysis; your clinician will explain when and how the report will be discussed.

Ask how a detected change could affect treatment, whether a negative or uninformative result needs confirmation, and whether testing may be repeated if the clinical picture changes. Do not alter treatment based on a report without discussing it with the treating team.

Contact the clinic if you develop increasing pain, new breathlessness, confusion, marked weakness, or other rapidly changing symptoms while waiting for results. These symptoms need clinical attention regardless of the blood test. Seek clarification promptly if the report uses terms you do not understand or recommends tissue confirmation.

Ask what DNA change the test is looking for, how reliable the result is for your situation, and whether a tissue biopsy remains necessary. Ask how the finding might change treatment, what an uninformative result means, and who will explain the report with you.
