Growth and Doppler Scan in Pregnancy: What to Expect

A growth scan measures parts of the baby's body, such as the head, abdomen, and thigh bone, to calculate an estimated weight and compare growth over time. The sonographer may also assess the placenta, amniotic fluid, position, movement, and heartbeat. These measurements are estimates rather than a direct weighing of the baby.

Doppler ultrasound adds information about blood flow, often in the umbilical cord and selected maternal or fetal vessels. The pattern helps the care team understand how the placenta is working and whether monitoring should be adjusted. A scan result is interpreted alongside your blood pressure, symptoms, pregnancy history, and earlier scans.

Follow the preparation instructions from your imaging service; many scans need no special preparation. Wear clothing that allows access to your abdomen and bring previous reports if requested. During the scan, you may feel gel and gentle pressure from the probe. Ask which measurements were taken, whether the fluid and placenta were seen clearly, and when the clinician will explain the report.

If growth appears slower or faster than expected, the next step may be another scan, Doppler review, blood-pressure checks, or a discussion about timing and place of birth. One measurement rarely answers the whole question, and the team will explain the pattern they are following.

A scheduled scan does not replace urgent maternity advice. Contact your maternity unit promptly for reduced fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling, or severe abdominal pain. Ask where to go if the appointment reveals an unexpected finding or the sonographer asks you to speak with the obstetric team.

Ask: Why has this scan been recommended? Which blood vessels will be assessed? How will the estimated size be interpreted? When will the result be reviewed, and what follow-up would be considered?
