Short answer

Groin muscle pain relief usually starts with reducing the movement that triggers pain, using comfortable symptom relief, and gradually restoring strength after the cause is clearer.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Early focus
Avoid the painful trigger while keeping comfortable movement.
Rebuilding
Increase strengthening gradually with symptom guidance.

What groin pain can mean

Pain may come from the inner-thigh muscles after a sudden change of direction, a forceful stretch, or repeated sport movements. It can also be felt when a hip joint problem irritates nearby tissues. Pain with coughing, walking, turning, or bringing the legs together gives a clinician useful clues, but does not identify one cause by itself.

A simple muscle injury often settles as the tissue is protected and then reloaded gradually. Ongoing or deep groin pain may need assessment for Hip Impingement, Hip Labral Tear, or Hip Osteoarthritis.

Steps that may ease it

For the first phase, pause sprinting, kicking, deep lunges, and any exercise that sharply increases symptoms. Keep gentle, pain-limited movement such as short walks if comfortable. Cold or warmth may feel helpful; place a barrier between the skin and the pack and stop if the skin becomes numb or irritated. A pharmacist or clinician can help you choose an appropriate pain medicine, especially if you have stomach, kidney, bleeding, pregnancy, or other health concerns.

When everyday movement is easier, a physiotherapist can guide inner-thigh, hip, and trunk strengthening and adjust the load as symptoms respond. Sports Physiotherapy can be useful when the pain began during training or competition.

When to seek care

Arrange medical assessment if pain is severe, follows a fall or direct blow, causes marked swelling or bruising, or makes weight-bearing difficult. Seek urgent help for a cold or pale leg, new weakness or numbness, fever with a hot swollen area, severe testicular pain, or a painful groin bulge that will not go back in. If symptoms are not steadily improving with relative rest, book an assessment so the hip, muscles, and other nearby structures can be checked.

Questions for your doctor

Could the pain be from an adductor muscle, the hip joint, or another nearby structure? Which movements should I pause, and what activity is safe now? When should I begin strengthening, and what change would mean I need another review?

Questions people ask

Should I stretch a painful groin muscle?

Do not force a stretch into sharp pain. Gentle range-of-motion work may be reasonable when comfortable, while stronger stretching is better introduced after assessment or as part of a graded programme.

Can groin pain come from the hip?

Yes. Hip problems can be felt in the groin, so persistent or movement-related pain deserves an examination rather than assuming it is only a muscle injury.
