What should you know about granuloma annulare similar conditions?

Granuloma annulare commonly appears as smooth bumps arranged in a ring or arc, while ringworm more often has a scaly advancing edge. Eczema may be dry and itchy; psoriasis can have a sharper border and surface scale. Small firm lumps under the skin, insect reactions and some other inflammatory disorders can also overlap in appearance. Colour, texture, scale, symptoms, body location and how the patch changes all help guide the assessment. These differences are not always clear in a photograph.

Do not assume every circular rash is fungal or start repeated treatments without a diagnosis. A dermatologist may inspect the border, feel the lesions and ask when they began, whether they itch, and what products or medicines touched the area. If the appearance is atypical or treatment has not helped, the clinician may recommend a skin scraping or biopsy. Once granuloma annulare is considered likely, a prescribed topical corticosteroid or a targeted steroid injection may be discussed. Book an assessment for a ring-shaped rash that persists, spreads, repeatedly returns or does not respond as expected to an appropriate treatment. Seek prompt care if there is pus, fever, rapidly worsening pain, significant swelling, blistering or skin breakdown. These signs may indicate infection, an allergic reaction or another condition requiring a different plan.

Ask which features support granuloma annulare and which point toward a fungal or eczematous rash. Ask whether testing is needed before treatment, what improvement should look like, and when to return if the border, scale or symptoms change.
