What should you know about granuloma annulare causes and treatment?

Granuloma annulare reflects inflammation in the skin and is not simply a surface infection. It can produce grouped, firm bumps that curve into rings or partial rings. The skin may be close to its usual colour, pink, red, or darker brown, depending on the person’s skin tone and the stage of the lesion. Some people have little discomfort, while others notice itch or tenderness. A clinician may diagnose it from its pattern, but a biopsy or another check can be considered when the appearance is atypical.

If lesions are mild and not troublesome, observation and gentle skin care may be reasonable after a clinician confirms the diagnosis. When treatment is wanted, a clinician may prescribe a topical corticosteroid for selected areas or discuss an intralesional steroid injection for a focused lesion. These treatments can reduce inflammation, but the choice must account for thin skin, body site, and possible colour change. Arrange an assessment if a ring-shaped eruption is new, persistent, enlarging, painful, or difficult to distinguish from an infection or another rash. Seek prompt help if the skin becomes very painful, develops open sores, or is accompanied by fever or marked swelling. A sudden widespread eruption also deserves timely review rather than self-treatment.
