What should you know about gout and rheumatoid arthritis?

Gout results from urate crystals that provoke inflammation, often in a sudden attack affecting one joint. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune inflammatory disease that commonly causes ongoing pain, swelling and stiffness in several joints, frequently involving the hands and feet. Morning stiffness and symmetrical hand swelling may occur with rheumatoid arthritis, while an abrupt, very tender, red joint can fit gout. These patterns are clues, not a diagnosis.

A clinician may review the duration and distribution of symptoms, examine your joints and request blood tests, imaging or joint fluid analysis. A person with rheumatoid arthritis can still develop gout, so a new flare should not automatically be attributed to the established condition.

Track which joints swell, how quickly symptoms start, how long morning stiffness lasts and whether you have finger stiffness or hand swelling. Keep all rheumatology and primary-care appointments, and tell the team about every medicine. Anti-inflammatory medication can be useful for some people but may interact with other treatment or be unsuitable with certain health problems. Gentle movement and an individual physiotherapy plan can help preserve function without forcing an acutely inflamed joint.

Seek urgent medical attention for a hot swollen joint with fever or marked illness, because infection can resemble gout or rheumatoid inflammation. Request prompt review for rapidly worsening hand swelling, new weakness, severe loss of movement or symptoms affecting several joints. Persistent morning stiffness or repeated flares deserve assessment even when pain settles between episodes.

Ask whether the pattern suggests gout, rheumatoid arthritis or both, whether joint fluid or imaging would clarify the cause, and how your anti-inflammatory medicines should fit with existing treatment.
