What should you know about glioblastoma multiforme of brain?

Glioblastoma, also called GBM, begins in the brain and can grow into nearby brain tissue. Its position and swelling around it can affect movement, speech, memory, vision, mood or seizure control. Symptoms depend on the area involved and may change over time.

A diagnosis is usually confirmed by examining tumour tissue, alongside brain imaging. The pathology report helps the team understand the tumour and discuss suitable options. The name alone cannot predict how one person will respond.

Ask for a meeting with the specialists caring for you, which may include a neurosurgeon, neuro-oncology doctor, radiotherapy specialist and supportive-care team. Treatment may combine surgery to remove as much tumour as safely possible, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The sequence depends on the tumour’s location, your health, tissue findings and your goals.

Keep a written list of symptoms, medicines and questions. Support may include seizure treatment, steroids for swelling when prescribed, rehabilitation, help with speech or movement, and emotional support. A clinical trial may be discussed when it fits your situation.

Get urgent medical help for a first seizure, a seizure lasting longer than expected, repeated seizures without recovery, sudden weakness, new trouble speaking, severe confusion, loss of consciousness or a rapidly worsening severe headache with vomiting. Follow the emergency plan given by your treatment team and do not drive after a seizure.
