Giant breast fibroadenoma

Fibroadenomas are solid breast lumps made from glandular and connective tissue. A giant fibroadenoma can grow quickly, feel smooth and mobile, and stretch the skin or cause asymmetry. It is often found in younger people and may respond to hormonal changes, but a breast lump cannot be identified reliably by touch alone. A large or rapidly changing lump can resemble other breast conditions, so imaging and tissue assessment help distinguish them.

A clinician examines both breasts and nearby lymph nodes, then chooses imaging based on age, breast tissue and the examination. Breast ultrasound can show whether a lump is solid and how it relates to surrounding tissue. A breast biopsy may be advised when imaging is not definitive or when the lump is growing. If the mass is large, symptomatic, distorts the breast or remains uncertain, breast lump excision may be discussed. Observation can be suitable in selected cases with reassuring findings.

Arrange assessment for any new breast lump, especially one that enlarges, becomes firm or fixed, changes the skin or nipple, or causes persistent discomfort. Seek prompt care for redness with fever, sudden swelling, bloody nipple discharge, skin dimpling or an armpit lump. These signs do not establish a diagnosis, but they should not be delayed.
