What a shaving rash means

Shaving can remove surface skin cells, create tiny cuts, irritate follicles, and push hairs back into the skin. Redness and small bumps that begin soon after shaving often fit irritation, but a rash may also be caused by product sensitivity, infection, heat, friction, or an existing skin condition. Depending on its pattern, a clinician may consider [Contact Dermatitis](/conditions/contact-dermatitis/), [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/), [Heat Rash](/conditions/heat-rash/), or [Intertrigo](/conditions/intertrigo/).

What to do now

Stop shaving the area until it settles. Rinse with lukewarm water, apply a cool compress, and use a fragrance-free moisturiser. Avoid alcohol-based aftershave, scrubs, picking, tight clothing, and repeated passes over the skin. When you resume, soften hair with warm water, use a clean sharp razor or an appropriate trimmer, shave in the direction of hair growth, and rinse the blade between strokes. Do not share razors. If bumps contain pus or keep returning, a clinician can check for follicle inflammation or another diagnosis rather than treating blindly.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if the rash lasts beyond the expected irritation period, repeatedly returns, becomes intensely itchy, or forms painful pus-filled bumps. Seek prompt care when redness is rapidly spreading, the skin is hot and swollen, red streaks appear, or you develop fever or feel unwell. A rash after a new medicine needs medical advice; possible [Drug Rash](/conditions/drug-eruption/) should not be self-diagnosed.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Is this razor irritation, ingrown hair, follicle infection, or another condition? Which products should I stop? When can I shave again? Would a different hair-removal method reduce recurrence? Do the symptoms fit [Psoriasis](/conditions/psoriasis/), [Ringworm](/conditions/ringworm/), or [Scabies](/conditions/scabies/)?
