Short answer

To settle a runny nose, drink fluids, use saline spray or rinses, avoid known irritants, and choose treatment based on whether allergy, infection, or sinus inflammation is involved.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common trigger
Allergens, irritants, and respiratory infections can all increase nasal mucus.
Gentle care
Saline and gentle nose blowing can reduce irritation.

Why your nose may be running

A runny nose occurs when the nasal lining produces extra mucus. Allergic Rhinitis may present with repeated sneezing, an itchy nose, or watery eyes; a Common Cold, Influenza, or COVID-19 may bring sore throat, cough, fever, or tiredness. Sinusitis can add facial pressure or thick mucus. House Dust Mite Allergy and Pet Allergy are possible triggers when symptoms recur around a particular environment.

Relief you can try

Use a sterile saline spray or a properly prepared saline rinse, and blow your nose gently. Drink regularly and rest if you have an infection. Reduce exposure to smoke, perfume, dust, and other personal triggers. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antihistamine, nasal steroid, or other medicine fits your symptoms. Follow the product directions, and avoid using decongestant nasal sprays for longer than advised because congestion can rebound.

When to get medical help

Seek medical advice if symptoms persist, keep returning, or are accompanied by facial pain, high fever, worsening breathlessness, or dehydration. Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or throat, confusion, or a sudden severe illness. Testing may be appropriate when respiratory infection symptoms follow a relevant exposure or local health guidance.

Questions for your doctor

Does the pattern fit allergy, infection, or sinusitis? Which nasal treatment is suitable for me? Should I be tested for an infection or reviewed for recurring triggers?

Questions people ask

Is a runny nose always a cold?

No. Allergies, irritants, sinus inflammation, and several infections can cause it.

Can I use a nasal decongestant for a long time?

Use it only for the duration advised on the product or by a clinician, since prolonged use can worsen blockage.
