Short answer

To get rid of jock itch, keep the groin clean and dry, use an appropriate topical antifungal as directed, and seek care if the rash spreads or does not improve.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How jock itch behaves

Jock itch, also called tinea cruris, is a fungal infection of the groin and nearby inner thigh skin. It often causes itch, burning, scaling, and a defined rash that may extend outward from a fold. Moisture, sweating, friction, and sharing towels or clothing can help fungi persist. The penis and scrotum are less typical sites, so marked involvement there may point to another diagnosis. Groin itch without a clear ring-like rash can also come from irritation or a different skin condition; an examination helps separate these possibilities.

Steps for clearing the rash

Wash the area gently, dry every fold carefully, and change out of sweaty clothes promptly. Wear loose, breathable underwear and avoid rubbing or scratching. A topical antifungal may be suitable for an uncomplicated rash; apply it to clean, dry skin according to its instructions and complete the recommended course even if the itch eases early. Do not use a steroid cream alone on a suspected fungal rash, because it can alter the appearance and allow infection to continue. Treating athlete’s foot at the same time may reduce transfer back to the groin. A clinician may consider oral antifungal treatment when topical care is unsuitable, ineffective, or the infection is extensive.

When to seek care

Arrange an appointment if the rash is spreading, painful, recurrent, or unchanged after a properly used antifungal. Seek prompt care for fever, pus, rapidly increasing redness, significant swelling, skin breaks, or diabetes with a new groin infection. Diagnosis matters because eczema, contact dermatitis, and other rashes can resemble jock itch.

Useful questions

Ask whether the rash is fungal, whether a skin sample is needed, which treatment fits its location, and how long to use it. Also ask how to manage athlete’s foot, laundry, towels, and recurrent sweating.
