How to get rid of genital warts quickly and safely

Genital warts are growths caused by certain types of human papillomavirus. They may be raised, flat or clustered and can occur on genital or nearby skin. Not every bump is a wart, so a clinician may examine the area before treatment. Changes affecting the vulva are described further under [Vulval Skin Changes](/symptoms/vulval-skin-changes/).

Do not use ordinary pharmacy wart removers on genital skin. A clinician may prescribe [Imiquimod Treatment](/treatments/medical-dermatology/imiquimod-therapy/) for selected external warts, or remove lesions with freezing, such as [Cryotherapy (Lesion Removal)](/treatments/surgical-dermatology/cryotherapy-lesion-removal/), or a heat-based procedure such as [Electrosurgery](/treatments/surgical-dermatology/electrosurgery/). Avoid picking or shaving over lesions, and discuss condom use, partner information and testing for other sexually transmitted infections. [HPV Vaccination](/treatments/medical-gynaecology/hpv-vaccination/) helps prevent some HPV infections but does not remove existing warts.

Arrange an appointment if a growth is new, spreading, bleeding, painful, ulcerated, unusually pigmented or difficult to identify. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever or trouble passing urine. Pregnant people should obtain medical advice before applying any treatment.

Ask how the diagnosis was made, whether testing is appropriate, which treatment fits the location, and how to protect nearby skin. Discuss recurrence, sexual contact during treatment, partner communication and what to do if irritation becomes intense.
