How to get rid of bumps after shaving

Short answer
To calm shaving bumps, pause close shaving, use warm water and gentle skin care, and avoid picking until inflammation settles.

What causes the bumps
A freshly cut hair can curl back into the skin and cause an ingrown hair, especially after a very close shave. The surrounding skin may become red, itchy, tender, or raised. Shaving can also irritate follicles directly or allow folliculitis to develop. Razor Bumps, also called pseudofolliculitis barbae, are a recurring form of this problem; Keratosis Pilaris is a different condition that causes rough follicle-centred bumps and is not limited to shaving.
How to prevent a repeat
Let the skin rest before shaving again. When you resume, soften hair with warm water, use shaving gel, and shave in the direction of growth with a clean, sharp razor and light pressure. Avoid stretching the skin or repeatedly passing over one area. Rinse, pat dry, and apply a bland moisturiser. Do not dig for trapped hairs, squeeze pus-filled bumps, or use strong exfoliants on broken skin. If bumps keep returning, a clinician can recommend a suitable anti-inflammatory or follicle treatment. Laser Hair Removal may be an option for people whose recurrent ingrown hairs are linked to shaving, after an assessment of skin and hair type.
When to seek medical help
Seek care when redness spreads, pain increases, pus forms, the skin feels hot, or fever develops. Book a review for repeated episodes, dark marks, scarring, or bumps that do not settle after stopping the trigger. A clinician can check for infection, Ingrown Hairs, or another cause and tailor treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Are these ingrown hairs, irritation, or Folliculitis? Should I change my shaving method? Which product is safe on this area? Would Laser Hair Removal be reasonable for prevention?

Questions people ask
Should I pull out an ingrown hair?
Avoid digging into the skin. Pressure and sharp tools can worsen inflammation, introduce infection, and leave a mark.
Can shaving bumps be prevented?
They can often be reduced by avoiding an ultra-close shave, using lubrication, and limiting pressure and repeated strokes.
