How to get rid of a Bartholin cyst

Bartholin glands sit near the vaginal opening and release fluid for lubrication. If a gland duct becomes blocked, fluid can collect into a cyst. When bacteria infect the cyst, it can become an abscess with increasing pain, swelling, warmth or pus. Sitting, walking and sex may become uncomfortable.

A new lump near the vaginal opening should be examined, especially if you are older, the lump is firm or fixed, or it does not improve. The appearance and examination help distinguish a Bartholin cyst from other vulval lumps.

For a mild lump without severe pain or fever, sit in comfortably warm water for short periods several times a day, keep the area clean and dry, and avoid squeezing, cutting or trying to drain it yourself. Loose clothing can reduce rubbing. Use pain relief only if it is suitable for you and follow the label or a clinician's advice.

A painful abscess often needs a small procedure to let the fluid drain and keep the opening from closing too soon. Antibiotics may be used when infection is present or particular risk factors apply. Marsupialisation creates a lasting opening to help prevent another blockage.

Arrange prompt care for a rapidly enlarging lump, severe vulval pain, pus, fever, redness spreading into nearby skin, or difficulty walking or sitting. Seek urgent help if you feel faint, very unwell, or have trouble passing urine. Do not delay assessment if a lump keeps returning.

Ask whether the lump is a cyst or abscess, whether drainage is needed, which pain relief is suitable, how to care for the area afterwards, and how recurrence will be handled. Ask whether the lump should be tested because of your age or its appearance.
