Short answer

Gamot sa foot and mouth disease is supportive: ease pain, encourage fluids and watch for dehydration or a child who is becoming very unwell.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Most useful support
Cool fluids, soft foods and child-appropriate pain relief
Main risk to watch
Reduced drinking and dehydration

What this illness looks like

Hand, foot and mouth disease is a contagious viral illness that often affects children. A child may develop fever, a sore throat, painful mouth ulcers and small spots or blisters on the hands, feet or other skin areas. Mouth pain can make drinking and eating difficult. The illness is different from the livestock disease with a similar name. Most children improve with supportive care, but hydration and behaviour need attention throughout the illness.

Comfort and hydration

Offer cool fluids often, using a cup, spoon or straw that your child accepts. Soft, cool foods may be easier than hot, spicy or acidic foods. Use child-appropriate paracetamol only according to professional advice and the label; never give aspirin to a child. Keep the child home from childcare or school while feverish or too unwell to participate, and wash hands after nappy changes or toilet use. A Child Health Consultation can help if pain is limiting drinking or you are unsure about symptom relief.

When to seek care

Get urgent medical help if the child is hard to wake, confused, struggling to breathe, has a seizure, cannot swallow fluids, is repeatedly vomiting or shows dehydration such as very little urine, a dry mouth or no tears. Seek prompt advice for a persistent fever, severe mouth pain, rapidly worsening rash or a child who is less responsive than usual. Keep blisters clean and discourage scratching.

Questions for your doctor

Does the rash and mouth soreness fit this illness? How can I keep my child drinking? Which pain medicine and dose are suitable? When can my child return to school or childcare? Which changes require same-day or emergency care?
