What should you know about galactocele treatment and antibiotics?

A galactocele can develop during breastfeeding or after milk production changes when milk becomes trapped behind a blocked duct. It may feel like a smooth, rounded lump and can change in size after feeding or expressing milk.

Antibiotics treat bacterial infection, not trapped milk. Breast pain, warmth, redness, fever or feeling unwell can point to mastitis or a breast infection, but these signs need clinical assessment rather than self-treatment. A persistent, enlarging or unusual lump may need imaging or drainage.

Arrange an appointment with a clinician or breastfeeding specialist for a new breast lump. Continue comfortable feeding or expressing if advised, avoid forceful massage, and use supportive clothing. Do not start leftover antibiotics or share someone else's prescription.

If infection is diagnosed, take the prescribed medicine exactly as directed and ask whether breastfeeding can continue. If the lump does not settle, follow-up matters because the diagnosis may need review.

Seek same-day medical advice for fever, spreading redness, increasing warmth, severe pain, pus-like discharge or a rapidly worsening breast swelling.
