Fungal urine culture: what to know

The laboratory places a urine sample in conditions that allow fungi to grow and then identifies growth when present. A result must be read alongside symptoms, examination findings, catheter use, recent antibiotics, immune health, and other test results. Growth may represent infection, colonisation, or contamination from collection rather than a condition needing treatment.

Burning, urgency, cloudy urine, pelvic discomfort, fever, or flank pain can have causes other than fungus. A culture is therefore one part of clinical decision-making, not a diagnosis that should be interpreted in isolation.

Follow the laboratory instructions carefully. Wash your hands, clean the area as directed, and collect a clean midstream sample into the sterile container without touching its inside. Tell the clinician about antifungal or antibiotic medicines, a urinary catheter, pregnancy, kidney problems, or immune conditions. Do not start, stop, or share treatment based on a result without discussing its meaning.

Contact a clinician promptly for fever, chills, vomiting, new flank or back pain, confusion, or feeling suddenly very unwell with urinary symptoms. People with a catheter, reduced immunity, pregnancy, or significant kidney disease should seek advice early because the significance of a positive result can differ.

Ask why the culture was ordered, whether the sample was collected correctly, what organism grew, and whether the result reflects infection or colonisation. Ask whether repeat testing, catheter management, or oral antifungal treatment is needed.
