Fungal sweat rash treatment: what to know

Fungal infection, blocked sweat ducts, and contact irritation can all cause red or bumpy skin. An antifungal helps only when fungus is involved. Heat rash often improves when the skin is cooled and kept dry, while irritation may require removing the trigger. A steroid can reduce inflammation but may disguise or worsen some fungal infections when used incorrectly.

The treatment choice also depends on location, broken skin, pregnancy, age, allergies, and other medicines. A clinician may inspect the rash and occasionally collect a sample when the pattern is unclear.

Wash gently, dry thoroughly, change sweaty clothing, and reduce tight fabric and friction. Use the recommended antifungal exactly as directed and complete the advised course, even if symptoms improve sooner. Avoid layering an emollient, steroid, and antifungal without instructions. Keep personal towels separate and wash clothing that contacts the affected area.

Arrange a review if the rash is not improving, spreads, returns quickly, or becomes painful. Seek prompt medical care for fever, pus, rapidly increasing redness, marked swelling, open skin, or severe tenderness. Do not keep changing products when the diagnosis is uncertain; repeated irritation can make examination harder.
