What should you know about fungal rash treatment at home?

Ringworm may appear as an itchy, scaly patch with a more active edge, but appearance alone cannot confirm it. Eczema, contact dermatitis, heat rash, psoriasis, and scabies may be mistaken for fungal infection. Steroid cream used without an antifungal can change the appearance and make assessment harder.

Moisture, friction, and occlusive clothing can keep the skin irritated. Scratching may create breaks in the skin and move the rash to nearby areas.

Follow the product label or clinician's directions for a suitable topical antifungal, including how long to continue. Gently wash, dry carefully between skin folds, wear breathable clothing, and change damp garments. Wash towels, clothes, and bedding that touch the area, and do not share them. Keep the tube and application area clean, wash hands before and after use, and avoid picking. Do not use household disinfectants, bleach, or essential oils on skin.

Arrange medical advice if the rash is on the scalp, face, nails, or genitals, covers a broad area, keeps returning, or is not settling with correct use. Seek prompt care for fever, spreading redness, severe pain, warmth, swelling, pus, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Pregnancy, infancy, and a weakened immune system are reasons to check treatment choices first.
