Fungal Rash in Skin Folds: Recognition and Care

Common sites include the groin, under the breasts, armpits, abdominal folds, and spaces between toes. The skin may look red or brown, feel itchy or burning, and become tender, shiny, cracked, or moist. Small spots beyond the main edge can occur with some fungal rashes, but appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Intertrigo describes inflammation in a fold and may occur with or without infection. Atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, heat rash, psoriasis, and ringworm are other possible explanations for fold irritation.

Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, rinse carefully, and pat dry rather than rubbing. Dry after bathing and sweating, change damp underwear or clothing, and choose breathable fabrics. Keep nails short to limit damage from scratching. Do not share towels, and wash clothing that contacts the rash. A pharmacist or clinician can recommend an antifungal treatment when appropriate; apply it to clean, dry skin as instructed and avoid putting products on broken skin unless advised.

Medical review is appropriate if the rash is spreading, persistent, recurrent, or difficult to distinguish from another condition. Seek prompt care for fever, pus, rapidly worsening redness, warmth, swelling, open sores, or severe pain. A clinician should also assess fold rashes sooner in people with diabetes or weakened immunity.

Ask whether the rash is fungal, how to keep the particular fold dry, which treatment fits the site, and whether another skin condition is contributing. Mention recent antibiotics, new products, sweating patterns, and previous treatments.
